Dan Oliver (b.1963) is a Chicago-based artist, born in the American Midwest, and influenced by movements such as Surrealism, German Romanticism, and the Chicago Imagists. His diverse interests in philosophy, cinema, history and music also inform his studio practice. In 2021, his exhibition, Afire, at the Evanston Art Center, which opened on the 150th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, launched his most recent body of work concerned with fire as a symbol of transformation on both personal and societal levels. His timely, dreamlike imagery has attracted the interest of an international audience, with recent exhibitions in Asia, Europe and the United States.
